Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish priest who was imprisoned in Auschwitz during World War II. When a prisoner escaped from the camp, the deputy camp commander picked 10 men to be starved to death. This was done in order to discourage any other attempts at escape. One of the men who was sentenced to death cried out that he had a wife and children. Father Kolbe volunteered to take his place and was allowed to do so.
The 10 prisoners chosen were then deprived of food and water. After two weeks of this treatment, Father Kolbe was the only one who remained alive. He was then given a lethal injection and died on August 14, 1941.
This painting of Saint Maximilian Kolbe was inspired by the one painted by Brother Feliks Sztyk. It was commissioned by a family in Georgia.

I'm an artist from Kitchener, Ontario. I like to create art that is uplifting and positive--paintings that have meaning for the owners-- portraits of people they know and love, and of places theyve been to or hope to visit one day. I paint landscapes, portraits, florals, and still life. There is beauty everywhere--in the patterns in the fabric of a sari, in the textures on the bark of a tree, in the colours on the peel of an apple, in the light in a person's eyes. ...To see more of my artwork, visit my facebook page here or visit my website here
